What a gorgeous timeless image - I love the b/w!! The image doesn't do justice to the detailing of her bridal lengha but I love her expression.

Another one of my favorites: it's so youthful and fun. I love how you can see the light shining through the net duppatta!

Summer has come and gone faster than I can believe. I can't believe that the first day of autumn has already come and gone and there are winter jackets, snow boots and Christmas decorations ready for sale in all the major department stores. Well, whatever it is we can't really stop time or change it can. Only to make the best of it.

I've been wanting to feature one of my favorite weddings from the 2009 Edition of The Cultural Wedding Planner. The reason it is one of favorite is not only because the bride is stunning gorgeous, her outfits are absolutely amazing as are those of the groom but just because the bride has been part of our journey with cultural weddings I guess since our earlier days anyway. So introducing the beautiful bride: Jody and her groom Pav.

I had to pleasure of meeting Jody in 2004 when she volunteered to work with our show manager Mr. Colin Sines (an amazing, big hearted, fabulous individual). She was I think a student at BCIT at the time but got the gist of the all the behind the scenes action that go into wedding planning. Fast forward 2006. Jody and her family are exhibitors representing Purba furniture at the Grand Wedding Show at the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre. Okay fast forward again 2007 Jody calls to request tickets because it's her turn to plan the wedding of her dreams and she would like to attend as a guest. Yeah!!! So exciting. After seeing her pictures and how great everything looked you can tell, she planned the wedding to a "t" and it turned out perfect. Here are some of favorite shots from her wedding. It Was All in the Proposal

Salma and Zameel met at university and were together for seven years before a marriage proposal cemented their relationship.

The proposal happened unexpectedly. Zameel, a medical student, was in Vancouver for the Christmas holidays. On Wednesday, December 21, he had made plans to take Salma for lunch at one of their special date restaurants, Taki's Tavern. Then another couple was going to join them to go up to Grouse Mountain for the first time and go skating. After a nice late lunch, Zameel's friend called to say they wouldn't be able to make it up to Grouse Mountain. So Salma and Zameel headed up themselves. As the sun set and the Vancouver rain began to drizzle, the couple went up on the gondola to the top of the mountain. They got off the gondola and it was a beautiful sight with Christmas lights and decorations.

On the Way

After a windy, shaky gondola ride down the mountain, the couple got into the car and headed downtown. Salma fell asleep and when she woke, Zameel was on the phone, trying to figure out where to park. They were meeting a friend who worked at the Opus Hotel in Yaletown. All the parking in the vicinity of the hotel was full, so they used the valet and headed inside. The elevators were locked, their friend called down to let his guests up to the penthouse. As Zameel and Salma got out of the elevator, their friend came rushing towards them. His car was about to be towed away, so he had to go move it. He gave Zameel the room key and promised to be back soon.

The Moment

Zameel opened the door to the room. Inside it was dark except for candles that illuminated the entire room. Salma looked at Zameel questioningly. He told her to follow the path. Salma looked down, and there was a path on the floor made with hundreds of colorful chocolate kisses. With her heart pounding, Salma began to follow the path. Along the way were not only candles, but also photographs. The first was a picture of Salma as a baby and then Zameel as a baby. Then a picture of them as toddlers and so on.

As Salma followed the path of kisses, she turned the corner around the fireplace and there was a bed covered in rose petals with two long-stemmed roses on the pillows. At the edge of the bed were tealight candles arranged in a heart shape, with arrows pointing the direction to follow. Salma continued walking, following the chocolate kisses, candles, and photos.

The path ended in the bathroom in front of a large shower. The shower floor was completely covered in red rose petals, lined with glowing candles, and at the end was a square black ottoman. The ottoman was covered in rose petals, two more long-stemmed roses, and large, framed picture of the couple. On top of the roses was a letter and Salma picked it up and began to read.

"Dear Salma, We've feasted to our delight at a restaurant we call our own. We've skated at the top of the world. Know that I kiss the ground you walk on, and I'll always shower you with roses. I know we will both cherish this moment forever, for tonight is a night when we become one soul from two. Now turn around and follow the kisses back to me because I have a very important question to ask you. Yours forever, Zameel."

With tears streaming down her face, Salma walked back to Zameel. He took her hand and spoke beautiful words of their love and their life. Then Zameel took out the ring, got down on one knee, and said, "Salma Amin Dinani, will you marry me?" So overcome with emotion, all Salma could do was nod her head to say yes, yes, yes!

And Then...

And then, as soon as Salma was able to speak, she wanted to know every detail: how he had arranged everything, how he had kept it a secret, who knew, and so on. Zameel patiently told her everything. Then, as Zameel had prepared in advance, dinner was sent up to the room. But that wasn't the end of it. Zameel had also made a game for them to play. There was an envelope full of questions about the couple and their individual lives. Each time Salma got a question right, she would get to put her hand in a bag and take out a few puzzle pieces. If she got enough questions correct, she would be able to complete the puzzle, which was six photographs of the couple that Zameel had put into a puzzle!

"The whole proposal was a complete surprise. It was the most romantic thing, more than I could have ever expected and it was a moment I'll never forget." says Salma

The Wedding Was Equally Amazing

Salma and Zemeel are Ismaili Muslims so they married in accordance with their traditions, which include getting married at jamat khana (mosque) by the leaders of theirjamat.

“We wanted a traditional location but we also wanted to be connected with the outdoors. So we held the ceremony at the mosque but organized it outside in the courtyard. The Vancouver wedding reception of choice was the Radisson Hotel Richmdon because it was practical and it could accommodate all 300 guests.

The bride wore a white sari to the ceremony which is the tradition, then a white wedding dress to the reception.

The groom wore a traditional black Indian suit to the ceremony and a black tuxedo to the ceremony.

The family helped with the centerpieces and the groom’s aunt made the flower arrangements and decorated the cake.

The groom's parents hired a catering company to make sandwiches and sherbet for the afternoon after the ceremony, and we had Chairs with Flair put chair covers and bows at the reception explains Salma.

Surprises from the Day

Salma and her bridal party entered to the Beverly Hills Cop theme song in a fun fashion-show entrance.

Zameel surprised Salma with a serenade of the song "I Want to Grow Old With You" from the movie The Wedding Singer.

The groom's mother surprised the couple with décor for the reception that made the courtyard look a little like the outdoors, including an original Monet backdrop.

Atish Ram Media prepared an amazing slideshow of pre-wedding and wedding pictures, a video interview, and musical theme songs.

The couple surprised everyone with their first dance, which started out with a slow song and then switched to a fast salsa.

Salma & Zameel | Muslim Ismaili Wedding Vancouver | Zindagi TV

This week, we're featuring the beautiful Ismaili Muslim Wedding of Salma & Zameel.

I love the softness and freshness of her overall look (definitely not over processed which seems to have become a trend these days but I'll save that for another blog).

A bit of background about Salma. She was a host has interviewed me several times on Zindagi TV. For those of you who are not from the greater Vancouver - Zindagi TV is a popular lisfestyle program geared at to the South Asian Community in Vancouver.

Atish Ram is not only the producer of Zindagi TV but also a Vancouver wedding photographer who gracefully documented their wedding story.

Salma had a pretty amazing proposal story which I will be posting later this week. But for now kudos to Zameel and his superior planning skills that made Salma's proposal so memorable. I'll be updating her story later this week but for now enjoy some of the beautiful shots.

A sweet proposal

Tami was back in Toronto, helping take care of her nieces who were visiting from Israel and Chris came out for a week. While visiting, Chris asked his mom for his great grandmother’s wedding ring. It’s a beautiful simple band with a small diamond starburst. On the last day of Chris’s visit, he and Tami decided to go raspberry picking with her nieces, Tami’s sister Hadas and her brother-in-law Yosh. Eventually everyone spread out and Chris called Tami over to see the most amazing raspberry ever. Humoring Chris, she went over and saw the ring, hidden behind a leaf. Chris said, “You make me berry happy. Will you marry me?” Overwhelmed, Tami started bawling and kept asking, “Are you serious?” Everyone looking on thought they had had a giant fight.

The couple decided to get married in the summer in Vancouver. For those of you who have never been to Vancouver (although it rains almost every other day; Tami and Chris were blessed with incredible rain-free weather.

Before the Jewish ceremony

They organized an egalitarian Jewish wedding that was officiated by the wonderful Rabbi Hillel Goelman.

“Rabbi Goelman was wonderful. He met with us many times before the wedding day to make sure that we were ready for this commitment. On our wedding day, he made everyone feel comfortable and engaged. He played guitar and had everyone singing, which added to the joyfulness" says Tami.

The day began about 45 minutes before the guests arrived. Traditionally, about 20 family members and close friends gather for the signing of the Jewish marriage certificate known as the Kettubah. “But the room was so hot we left the door open and as guests arrived they peered in and joined us,” Tami says. “I started slightly flipping out and whispered, ‘Oh my god. They think it’s the wedding. They don’t know it’s the Kettubah.’ Chris calmly answered, ‘It’s okay. We’ll just have the biggest Kettubah in history.’ So they did!

After the signing of the Kettubah, Rabbi Goelman had Chris and the men go to one side of the room while Tami and the women stayed on the other side. The men each laid a hand on Chris, and if they were too far away, they put their hand on the shoulder of someone who was touching Chris. The women did the same with Tami. Then Chris and Tami closed their eyes and the group moved them together. Tami and Chris then opened their eyes and saw each other for the first time as husband and wife.

“It was the most wonderful moment of the entire day,” Tami recalls. “The positive energy, the exuberant joy and the love of that moment made it marvelous. Of course everyone laughed like crazy.”

Of course everyone including Tami laughed like crazy.

Tradition with a twist

The ceremony was a traditional Jewish ceremony, but they added a few twists.

So that all 115 guests, including kids, could feel close to the bride and groom, the seating was arranged in a circle around the Jewish marriage canopy, called a chuppah, which was held by four dear friends. To personalize it, Chris’s parents gave them a quilt handmade by his great grandma Bacher." It was lovely to get married under all the color, beautiful handwork and intention of the quilt,” Tami says. “It was a perfect symbol of marriage: a series of individual pieces of colour that together makes a cohesive legacy.”

Another twist involved the tradition during the ceremony when a bride walks around the groom seven times. Both Tami and Chris realized that they wanted to do something a little different, so they each walked around the other three times and then walked around the wedding circle to include their guests.

Details of the ceremony

The ceremony took place outside on the grounds, surrounded by the beautiful gardens, where the couple also took family photos. The reception was held in the Aberthau Mansion and spilled out onto the patio and lawns. Besides the historical character, picturesque setting; they also allow you to bring in your caterer which really works for many couples.

“Having the entire event in the same location worked out perfectly for us,” Tami says. “Our guests were able come and enjoy themselves without having to move around or drive again”

Wedding gown was a steal of a deal

The bride wore a brand-new Vera Wang gown that she got for $100. “It was a total accident,” Tami says. “Several years ago I had heard about a Toronto charity called the Bride’s Project. It allowed brides-to-be to buy a huge variety of dresses at drastically reduced prices. The best part is that proceeds go to a camp for children with cancer. While visiting Toronto over Christmas the year before the wedding, Tami's sister Hadas and Tami decided to pop by the Bride’s Project. The first seven dresses were lovely, but too traditional. She was about to leave when the owner asked her what she was looking for. She answered, ‘Something a little irreverent,’ and she picked out an ivory dress that didn’t look like much on the hanger. Hadas, who is a fashion designer, looked inside the dress and freaked when she saw it was a Vera Wang. Tami put it on and it fit like a glove. Hadas turn to Tami earnestly and said, ‘Let me handle the negotiating.’ She asked the owner how much and she said it was the same price as all bridesmaid dresses. $100. ‘That’s it? Oh my god! That can’t be right! Are you sure it isn’t more?’ Tami quietly turned to Hadas and said, ‘Shut up.’ Then turned to the owner and said, ‘We’ll take it.’”

On a side note: I happened to catch a wedding story on CBC a few weeks ago titled 'Wedding Bills' and there was a segment about the Bride's Project. Really, a great choice for brides wanting to make a conscious buying decision. I'm not surprised that Tami picked out her very own dress from here as well.

Surprises at the reception

Tami’s brother-in-law surprised everyone by having a Mariachi band perform. “So we had our first dance to a live band. Hello? What could be better?”

As another surprise, Chris and his best friend performed Weezer’s “El Scorcho”. When they first dated, that was the song that Chris sent to say he had feelings for Tami. The words said it all: “I think I’d be good for you and you’d be good for me.” Chris was a rock star performing truly from the heart. Tami bawled. Again.

“Instead of cutting of the cake, they decided to kill the cake. What does that mean? Everyone had to scream at the top of their lungs when they put the knife in the cake and stop immediately once it was out.”

April Bellia from April Cakes created the most beautiful wedding cake. “She truly took the time to get to know us and captured who we were with strawberry shortcake and fondant,” Tami says. “We felt her warm wishes in every bite! For cake toppers we decided to go with Mexican wrestlers we had kicking around the house. She even made sure to have one wrestler touching the other’s bum! Keep that in mind brides...it's all about the littlest tiny details that make things so memorable.

To wrap up the day, Tami and Chris got an ice-cream truck to show up. Guests could order whatever they liked. It was great way to end the wedding on a sweet and unusual note.

Tami’s planning advice

Tami’s tells brides and grooms-to-be that when planning their wedding: “Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Other married couples are a wealth of knowledge and experience. Listen up because they can help save money and time. Also, there is a lot of information online and in magazines. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed so just keep the stuff you like, discard the rest.”

“Also, don’t be afraid to do your own thing. So many weddings are cookie cutter events, with only a few details changing from couple to couple. Be unique, be brave and stick to your vision.”

Time to relax

Right after the wedding Tami and Chris spent three days in Tofino for mini-moon. “It was a great way to relax and decompress after a long week and a half,” recalls Tami. Several months later, the couple decided to take a super-extended honeymoon. “We literally traveled around the world for four months, going to Toronto, New York, Italy, France, Monaco, Spain, Morocco, England, Israel, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong and finally Hawaii,” says Tami. “We figured we would never be able to see the world in quite this way again. It wasn’t always easy, but if it were easy it wouldn’t have been interesting.”

As a newlywed, Tami’s advice on a successful marriage is to avoid getting “hangry” with each other (that’s hungry and angry). If you’re both well fed, reason will usually prevail.

Congratulations Mr & Mrs. Cool!

One of the things I love most about summer besides weddings is Creamsicles. You know the ones I'm talking about (orange on the outside and vanilla ice-cream inside). So what do Creamsicles and weddings have to do with one another. Check out this picture. I love this shot! Photographed by the very, very talented Vancouver wedding photographer Hamid Attie of Tami & Chris.

Tami & Chris had this great idea of renting a Popsicle truck so their guests could indulge in a little summer nostalgia. I was so tempted to title Tami & Chris's wedding profile in the Cultural Wedding Planner - Introducing....Mr & Mrs Cool because I can't really think of any better words to describe this couple.

I met Tami in 2007. She's the boss of Fortuna Fortuna Birdy Productions Inc. but was working as an independent producer for CBC - Living Vancouver. Tami was producing a segment titled 'Off White Weddings' and asked me to be the Cultural Wedding Specialist talking about all the "should and should nots"that brides and grooms need to consider when it comes to their dream wedding including her own.

I was pleasantly surprised at how fun and easygoing the shoot went which took place at the beautiful Vancouver wedding venue: The Hyatt Regency (thanks to Naved Noorani). There were a few moments of Tami's spontaneous acting skills which kind of took me by surprise but I caught on quickly. My 2 bits turned out be 6-bits and ended up in approximately 6 segments of her series. I'll try to add a few links of the footage to the blog as well just in case you'd like to see it.

Tami and Chris had a Jewish wedding at the gorgeous Aberthau Mansion which is a beautiful heritage Tudor-style mansion located at West 2nd Avenue and NW Marine Drive in posh West Vancouver (very close to Jericho beach). They customized the actual Jewish ceremony by modifying existing traditions and creating their very own. I think that's the coolest thing when couples create their own traditions. It makes the wedding more personal and meaningful.

I also love the fact that Tami and Chris didn't go for a 'typical theme' in a way. They went more for an attitude which was clearly evident of who they are as a couple and most probably why their friends and family love them so much - me included.

I haven't had the opportunity to meet Chris in person though; but I know him well enough from the pictures that if I ever saw him; I would know who he was and all the little details about his wedding...which would probably freak him out a bit (that did happen to another groom I met at the Westin Bayshore last year...that was fun and another blog).

Their theme according to Tami, "A little irreverent, a little quirky and not so serious"; hence the published title of Tami & Chris's celebration of love in the Cultural Wedding Planner.

One common Jewish wedding tradition is for the groom to break a glass with his foot; representing the fragility of life and marriage. I'll be discussing some of this and other Jewish Wedding traditions more in part 2 of Tami & Chris's Traditional Jewish Wedding. I'll also tell you how they specifically customized everything. I love this shot. My most favorite spot in Vancouver - Jericho beach. I've spent more time here than anywhere else on the planet so far. Perfect location for wedding pictures in Vancouver and some not so good burgers in the summer. Hint-- pack a lunch!

Mehndi Artists Vancouver || Mehndi Designs by Iti || Ethnic Wedding Customs || Henna Tips

Doesn't it just feel like the summer days just run away. With the 'to do lists' stretching and the long days: it seems that more rather than less should be done but sometimes it's just time to sit back and sip an ice-cap. The caffeine rush and some icy cold should help you bring it all back into perspective. Well the weeks been hectic not to say the least: but I wanted to add some tips for brides getting their henna done in the next few weeks. And if you haven't already be sure to book a henna artist for your bridal party as well - get on it. Henna artists are limited and high in demand during this season - so if you're waiting - what for?

If you've already booked your henna artist try to schedule your henna to applied at least 2 days in advance of your wedding if you can. I've included a few more tips below which are taken from The 7th Edition of Canada's First South Asian Wedding Planner. The gorgeous images on the most part were photographed by Milan Photo Images, and the incredible mehndi is done by none other than Iti - of Mehndi Designs - one of Vancouver's premier henna artists. 1) If you are booking a henna artist for a group, be sure to discuss price before booking. Some times you can work out a package for a specified number of bridesmaid: be sure to discuss how intricate or not the design will be prior. Remember the more work: the higher the prices 2) Be patient. Applying mehndi is an art (visualize an artist painting on a blank canvas). In this case, you are the canvas so try not to fidget or squirm. Bridal mehndi application is a lengthy process sometimes taking 3 hours or more depending on the design you choose. Help yourself by having a good meal before the henna artist starts and pick out a couple of good Bollywood movies (average run time is 3 hours so you should be good); oh yeah and another very important thing: go to the bathroom before she starts. 3) Henna has a cooling effect so dress warmly and depending on the season you may want to have a heater close by. If it's hot and humid: you will feel great! Okay ... so get the rest of tips from your henna artist. And remember; henna isn't just for the hands. For any flattering figure: have it applied anywhere anytime - awesomeness!

Real Cultural Wedding: Kim & Greg: by Vancouver Wedding Photographer Greysquare Photographics

It's going to be a busy week. I'm kind of getting overly excited about all the weddings I want to blog about; all the fabulous photographs but instead have to take the advice I tell brides when they call for wedding consults: do one thing at a time and you end of getting way more done. Well...that's kind of hard: I mean after all - it is summer, lazy days, warm weather, bbq's, sitting on your patio with you laptop and of course celebrations of weddings from all different cultures. Yes, the summer season is upon us and promises to be exciting for brides and grooms AND wedding suppliers alike!!

Today I'm going to share with you a wedding that really, really represents true culture. I'm not surprised that Lara from Greysquare Photographics; a fabulous Vancouver BC based photographer had the pleasure to photograph (and boy did she ever do a fantastic job)!!! For those of you who don't know Lara: here's a bit about her: she's easy-going, friendly, a fantastic photographer (mentioned already), has been part of Cultural Weddings for at least 4 years now (her editorial work is featured in the Cultural Wedding Planner every year) and she is joyful. Yes, joyful. That's not a word that you can designate to just anyone. Really! When you speak to her: there's always an undertone of joyfulness and laughter in her voice. Imagine a photographer that's talented, joyful, affordable, and nice! What more could you ask for? So enough about Lara. You can visit her website if you want to know more after you read about all the details of Kim & Greg.

So a bit of background about this specific culturally influenced wedding.
Kim is from a Chinese/German background and Greg is from a Ukrainian/Canadian background, they are both vegetarian. In their wedding we see many hints of the Asian motif and in the food we see the vegetarian and Ukrainian influence. They are a very ‘tongue-in-cheek’ couple and their sense of humour shone throughout the wedding; in their favors, in the wine labels, and many other elements in their wedding. The back of her dress received many comments on the Obi inspired design it had.

Here is one of my most favorite images of Kim.

She wore a Cheongsam, a traditional Chinese dress, as well as a traditional European/North American white(ish) dress. She also incorporated Chinese tea sets (a tea pot and cups) into the centerpieces in honour of the tea ceremony tradition, but they didn't actually do a tea ceremony. Which just goes to show you that couples can personalize any custom; any way they choose and make it their own. It's all good...do it your way!

Greg picked out a very formal tux. Black pants, jacket and vest. White shirt and tie. Apparently it is a Polish superstition that the men in the wedding party cannot remove their vest during the wedding.

When I asked Kim about her theme she said there really wasn't a theme in a traditional sense. Rather Kim wanted to have a wedding that reflected both their personal styles; one of happiness and joy (hence the perfect reason to have Greysquare Photographics document their wedding for them). She made all of the tablecloths out of sari fabric and each table was a different colour. " I wanted everything to be colourful and happy. Some weddings are so somber and that wouldn't reflect Greg or I." she says.

Garlands Florists made the bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages. Kim was definitely a DIY bride. She put Greg in charge of organizing the food (doesn't it look fabulous..apparently it was all vegetarian). She said "I honestly didn't even know exactly what was happening in regards to the food, but I trusted that he likes food enough to do a good job planning it all. And our friend, Michel, who made it all, is an incredibly talented chef."

When I asked Kim what she still envisions from her wedding day she says " not being able to stop smiling. Even the entire way down the aisle, all I could do was smile." - and for obvious reasons Kim. You did an unbelievable job with your wedding. Everything looks amazing.

Kim's advice to brides and grooms planning their wedding: "If you don't want waterworks while walking down the aisle, keep your eyes on your man. All the ladies in the crowd are going to be blubbering and as soon as your see them, you'll be done too. Besides, you don't want to miss the look on his face when he first sees you!" Well said Kim!!

Hands down: Kim is very, very organized She even sent me a spread sheet to look at! Next thing she did to help get a handle on her wedding planning was to visit FrugalBride.

She also attended one wedding show where she found Shi Studios who made gifts to the girls in her wedding party. She got them to take a piece of the fabric from her Cheongsam and made pendants for the girls, it was a perfect gift.

Awesome Vancouver Henna Artist::Cultural Wedding Suppliers

One of most unique and sought after cultural wedding suppliers specifically for Indian weddings is none other than the henna artist. Remember back in the day when some designated aunty-jee would apply the bridal mehndi with a tooth pick? or what about the evolution of the stick-on mehndi patterns that were supposed to be fool-proof and guaranteed that anyone would have gorgeous mehndi for their weddings. Okay then came the mehndi cones. Yes, foil conicals filled with mehndi that is easy to apply - now if you only have the artistic ability to actually use this thing to create more than happy faces and flowers. Fast forward... the art of mehndi actually applied by professional mehndi artist.

I have had the pleasure of knowing: who I think is one of the most talented henna artists around. What started off as a temporary friendship (yes we agreed to be friends on a 3 month trial, was extended to one year and I think it's now been almost 8 years since I have known her first professionally then personally (intermittently between both). I'm talking about non other than Iti Chandra (now Iti Chandra-Kalsi) of MehndiDesigns.com

Iti really is an artist at heart and takes her work very seriously but makes it all fun. Her artistic ability is clearly evident when you see her work and her designs.

Her hand is steady and the lines are clean when she applies the mehndi. She uses some special scented oil that doubles up as an aromatherapy session when she's applying the mehndi . Actually I'm not sure why she uses it but is smells really refreshing. When she's done the henna pattern comes out vibrant and bright. The superstition of the lightness or darkness of the brides mehndi as an indication of how much the bride's mother inlaw will love her; is pretty much a right-off because every bride who gets their mehndi done from Iti will have dark mehndi. What a relief!!!

I wish I had known about her when I got married. Seriously, the lady who did my mehndi told me to put plastic bags over my hands after it was applied. After I met Iti, I found out nobody should ever do that. It makes your hands sweat and smudges the mehndi...YES of course!!
She's got a lot of other great tips but to get all details of her experience you can give her call.

She has done my mehndi for some special events a couple of times and I have to tell you she has patience. Not only to do the mehndi but to make the 'mehndi-receiver' be patient as well.

If you are looking for one the best henna artist in Canada; specifically in Vancouver or Surrey then be sure to talk with Iti first. She's great with getting back to people so leave a message if you get her voicemail.

Just a few more tid bits about Iti. Did I mention she's pretty nice. And she does awesome bridal mehndi, mehndi parties for the bridesmaids and family, Arabic mehndi, temporary henna tattoos (do a trial before you go for the big bang permanent one), 2 colour and silver and gold mehndi if you really want to coordinate your bridal outfits with your looks. Brazilian Beach Wedding - Angelica & Chris Part 11

Angelica and Chris wanted a wedding that reflected their personalities which meant: the beach, sun, tropical food and good music. Their chosen theme a rustic beach wedding in a beautiful village on the coast of

Brazil

. To be exact, the wedding took place on the warms sands of Tartaruga (Turtle) Beach in Buzios, a small city on the coast outside Rio de Janeiro.

Their theme was natural, feel good, uplifting - beige and yellow which complemented the natural surroundings of the beach (just the right amount without going overboard). OOOh...look at their cake! I absolutely love it!!

DIY bride Angelica planned and purchased every single detail of the decor which by the way is absolutely stunning!! Every little detail was planned and coordinated to perfection. She designed and produced the invitations, menus, wedding website and favors. While some brides are stressing over other details she also planned and customized every single detail of catering and wedding decor. She decided to hire a professional decorator to execute the decor plan on the actual wedding day so she could take-in and really enjoy herself.

The catering included only traditional Brazilian seafood dishes, beautifully arranged in giant

shells, pumpkin cups or earth bowls and the decorations with ample candles and and nautical lanterns, beautiful rustic wood-crafted furniture and a lot of white fabric.

Besides a DJ, they also hired a real school of samba with all its dancers to surprise the guests with a one-hour show. And my personal favorite part of the wedding was the personalized Hawaiian flip-flops they gave to their female guests who could take off their high heels after hours of dancing. See the great photo below. For those of you who didn't catch it, she used the same design that was incorporated on their wedding invite.

Brazilian wedding traditions

As Brazil is a Catholic country with a great influence of Afro religions that were brought to the country during slave times, some special wedding rituals have become part of Brazilian culture. Therefore, on the morning of the wedding day, at the beach where the couple would later be married, the bride and groom followed the ritual of Yemaja, the Sea Goddess. It’s a cultural religious tradition to first ask the blessing of the Sea Goddess to have happiness and fertility in the marriage.

The ritual consists of jumping seven waves before entering the water and then asking the goddess for a blessing before diving in. “According to the cultural belief, the saltwater cleanses our body of bad thoughts and negative energy, preparing us for the wedding to come,” Angelica explains.

During wedding, they also distributed colorful wristbands called fitinha do Bonfim, traditional lucky religious bracelets originally of northeastern Afro-Brazilian culture that are believed to give the person the right to ask for three wishes. As for this DIY bride: her wish for an absolutely amazing wedding on a beach came through: Great job Angelica! Congratulations to you both - thank you for sharing all these gorgeous details with us.

What Happens In Vegas - Doesn't Always Stay in Vegas

Each year we go through numerous submissions of wedding stories for the Cultural Wedding Planner. We are amazed at what efforts couples make for their wedding AND the actual marriage proposal. Some that make you wish you could actually witness in person (okay that goes a bit far - but reading and visualizing what happened). One of the proposals that really stands out for me is the story of Chris & Angelica. Kudos to Chris for making such an amazing proposal a reality!! Really knows how to add the WOW factor!! Angelica's marriage proposal must have made her the envy of every women she knows (and yes I admit...me too!)

So here it is: the short of it ( you and read the long and detailed version in the Cultural Wedding Planner - pick it from most HBC Gift Registries in BC).

One of the couple’s favorite things to do is travel and Las Vegas was definitely one of their favorite fun destinations. One night Chris surprised Angelica with two tickets to Vegas for the long weekend.When they arrived in Vegas she was pleasantly surprised to know that there was a beautiful room, in front of the water fountains, reserved at The Bellagio Hotel (in my opinion one of the most beautiful hotels in Vegas). The following day, after a breakfast by the pool, Chris told her he wanted to take her somewhere special but refused any details.He drove through the famous Las Vegas strip and she was surprised to see that he was entering the airport area and parked beside some helicopters.

After a tour of the canyon by helicopter they landed in the the middle of the Canyon where there was a table set with fruit and champagne waiting for them...(OMG!!)

But wait:....he didn’t propose there. When they got back to the Bellagio , there were more surprises including: Cirque du Soleil’s “O” show which was followed by dinner at the Picasso Restaurant at the Bellagio.

Not catching on to any of this or Chris's plan: the manager came to their table to inform them that their table was outside on the balcony (where dessert would be served). When they got outside there was only one small table, by the edge of the balcony, beautifully decorated with flowers, two candles and two glasses of champagne.

Then, when the fountains started their show, dancing to a song by Pavarotti, the waiter came to bring dessert and right after came back and said: The chef has sent something special for you” and placed a dish with flowers on the table.

Angelica still not getting it: took a while to see something sparkly inside one of the flowers. It was a ring! When she looked back at Chris, he was already on his knees!

Angelica quotes: "It was perfect! I couldn’t ask for anything better than that. It was not only one special moment, but a very special day, full of wonder and romance.” Yes Angelica - we definitely agree!

Yes...it sounds perfect. This really sets the proposal bar really high. What an amazing, meaningful, well thought out proposal. Wow!!! For any grooms looking for ideas: this is definitely an inspiring way for any women to be proposed to.

Cultural Weddings: Yoga Inspires Wedding Rings that Mean More Than I Do!

Mona & Tavaras Real Cultural Wedding - Part 2

So here are some more details of Mona & Tavaras beautiful cultural wedding celebration - the reception part of it anyway.

6:00pm ~ Guests entered the reception hall of the heritage house at Chateau Cargill where they signed their guest book which was located on a beautifully decorated entrance table with an embedded glass floral design. The seating cards were conveniently located here as well Inside the banquet area; the head table was beautifully decorated with gold draping and lights with the theme of hot pink/orange marigold pin ups and lots of candle lights to create an intimate setting. There were crisp white chair covers with gold sashes on each guest chair and the centre-pieces were embedded hot pink and orange marigolds in glass cylinders with floating candle tops.

6:30pm ~ Dinner to start followed by speeches.

8:00pm ~ Guests moved upstairs for the first dance and cake cutting. The cake was made by their friend Raj Birk and it tasted amazing.

8:30pm ~ The dancing and full party began. The whole upstairs hall was turned into a lounge with the dance floor in the middle. The decor was mendhi (henna) green and aqua blue with candle lights and chair covers.(I don't have any pictures of this yet but can only imagine what it looked like!)

The setting was perfect along with everything else!

Mona & Tavaras Real Cultural Weddings Vancouver White Rock BC ~Part 1

So here are the fabulous details from Mona & Tavaras's Cultural - double ceremony wedding. I think my first impression(s) of this wedding is 'light, airy, refreshing, modern and chic'. It is reflected throughout the entire wedding from the choice of colours - creamy beige softens the dramatic and joyfulness of the pinks and orange (btw - orange adds energy and boost to any occasion) and of course the regal detailing of traditional yellow-gold jewellery and embroidery. Here's one of my favorite images from the Hindu ceremony part of the wedding (lush and vibrant haar which were part of the jaya mala ceremony). And of course we wouldn't be able to share any of these with you if it wasn't for their fantastic photographer Amish Solanki.

The ceremony and wedding reception venue of choice was The Chateau Cargill located in the South Surrey more on beautiful White Rock side.

As each guest arrived, they received a hot pink/orange wedding agenda card with the following message: "You have been invited to share in one of the greatest moments of our lives. This is a celebration of our marriage and our 10 year Anniversary of being together...."

It was truly a fusion wedding with 200 of their closest nearest and dearest gathered for not one but TWO beautiful outdoor ceremonies followed by a dinner reception and night of dancing. It was the hottest day of the year which made it even more perfect!

Thanks to Mona for sharing the itemized-time line of the events:

3:00 pm: Mona wore a traditional Assamese mehkala (similar to a saree but specific to the region of Assam, India.) Quick geography lesson: Assam is a northeastern state of India.
Located south of the eastern Himalayas famous for things such tea and silk.

Tavaras wore an atchkin from Sunny's Bridal located in the Vancouver Punjabi market conveniently located at East 49th and Main Street. The ceremony was a truly meaningful family affair and very personal because Mona's grandparents from England conducted the actual Hindu ceremony.

4:00pm ~ Refreshments were served on the lawn (I've requested Mona to get some more pictures to me so hopefully we will get them soon!)

5:15pm ~ Civil Ceremony. There was a quick decor change where the mandup was turned into a modern floral backdrop design with hotpink flowers dangling from the pillars and pedestals covered with rose petals. The bride and groom also changed into their western attire to celebrate the western aspect of the civil ceremony.

Mona wore an off-white wedding dress from Lisa's Bridal in New Westminster (for brides still looking for the perfect wedding dress - several brides we have featured in the Cultural Wedding Planner each year have purchased their dream wedding gown from Lisa's Bridal - so before you make your choice - take a trip down wedding lane in the heart of New West where you will find the an array of wedding related shops. Tavaras wore a tuxedo from Leading Man Tuxedos also located in New Westminster.

Mona's bridesmaids wore hot pink mehkalas that her mom had made in Assam. If you take a close look at the picture below you can actually see Mona's business partner of Decorating Divas Design - Ravinder. Not only did she have to fill the shoes of a beautiful bridesmaid she was also repsonsible for all the florals including Mona's bridal bouquet, the bridesmaid flower ties and the lapel pins for the wedding party. She also juggled the responsibilty for the chic decor!!! Well done Ravinder and the team of bridesmaids who gave her a hand.

And I LOVE the colour of the mehkalas - for brides thinking about incorporating pink into their overall wedding theme; there are such a humungous number of pink options. It's soft, femine and can be paired with black, brown, orange, and platinum or simply put together with different hues.

I also especially love the use of the marigolds in the decor. They were smart to go with locally grown (enviro-friendly choice). Marigolds are often overlooked as a choice in floral decor but definitely versatile and something to consider. In weddings taking place in India, sometimes they decorate the wedding vehicle with garlands of marigolds - hmm there's a thought.

Okay, a few more details: as they entered, Mr. Headley played the Trinidadian steel pan drums and the ceremony was conducted by JP Mr. Bob Buzza. I'll post some of the detail shots tomorrow. Congratulations to both Mona & Tavaras!

Real Cultural Weddings: Mona & Tavaras : Hindu & Civil Ceremonies

Hindu Weddings 101

For many of you who are about to participate in a Hindu wedding either as a bride or groom or have been invited to one; you need to know some of the basics of what's going on. It just makes it that much easier and more enjoyable when you can actually understand some of the underlying symbolism that's going on. I'm going to keep it short here but for those of you want to know the intricate details that are often involved in this lengthy wedding ceremony; be sure to pick up your latest edition of The Cultural Wedding Planner - 5th Edition order your copy at www.culturalweddings.com. Oh and in case you missed it; yes I said lengthy. Even if you take the 'Coles note version' of the sacred vows; 90 minutes is rushing it according to the puchari (Hindu priest) and the fact that most of the ceremony is conducted in Hindi; well some times makes it hard to understand. Before I get to some of the important elements of the Hindu ceremony: here are a couple of tips to help guests get more out of a ceremony that they aren't really familiar with. First, have a ceremony programme (that actually explains what's going on - so your guests can understand and really appreciate the sacredness of a Hindu wedding. Need help let me know and I'll see what I can do 2) See if the priest can conduct the ceremony in both Hindi and English. It keeps things interesting and everyone understands what's going on 3) Yes, this is super important. Start the ceremony on time!!! Don't be casually late for your own wedding. Trust me, everyone will be looking at you on your wedding day - even if you arrive on time!

Okay then, here are Hindu Weddings 101.
The actual ceremony will be conducted under a mandap (a four posted canopy similar to a Jewish huppah). The four pillars represent the parents of the couples - symbolic of supporting the marriage. Kanya Daan is when the father of the bride formal 'gives away his daughter' by placing his daughters hand in the hand's of her husband to be. When the bride and groom come face to face at the mandap they exchange garlands with each other. This is formally known as the Jaya Mala ceremony. The priest will recite prayers and the Ganesh Puja will begin. Lord Ganesha (who takes the form of an elephant) is renowned as the 'Remover of Obstacles'. Prayers are recited to him to ensure that the marriage is free of hardships. Along with this prayers are recited to the Nine Planets knows and Nava Graha. Again the purpose of this is to ask the deities for peace and prosperity.

After all this (which by the way isn't really all of it) - the actual ceremony will begin. Phrases from the Vedas (The Hindu holy book) are recited. One of the keep parts of Hindu weddings is the presence of fire: known as god Agni. Fire symbolizes purity, power and light and acts as a witness to the sacrament that the couple is undertaking. Okay then, so as we move along the next part will be tying the knot (when the couple the outer parts of the couple's garments together - symbolically binding them together. Then the couple will circumambulate around the fire. Depending the what sect of Hinduism the couple follow: some will walk around the fire 4 times while others will walk around 7. With each circle, the priest is reciting to the couple the couple's responsibilities in their relationship. Followed by this is the ceremony of Seven Steps (or the Promise). The priest will ask bride to ask the groom 7 questions which the groom accepts. The groom will ask one question: the groom asks the bride one question and the bride will accept. Sorry guys: I can't literally translate the questions but they have to do with fidelity, union and devotion. I think you get it.

Okay so after this they perform the ring ceremony or mangal sutra (the groom puts a necklace made of black beads & gold around the bride's neck).

And now for one of the best parts (for the bride and groom anyway) . The blessings and gift giving. If I didn't mention this before: if you are invited to an Indian wedding of any kind be sure to add an extra loonie with your gift. It's added for extra luck. Elders, family and friends will offer their blessing to the couple and give them some money as a blessing. How sweet is that?

Congratulations to Mona of Decorating Divas! I just heard that she recently got married and will be sharing all the intimate details and some stunning images of her wedding. We're so excited for her. They have been part of cultural weddings family since 2003. Both Ravinder and Mona (principal decorators) are sweet and very accommodating. Their style is clean and contemporary and plus did I mention they are super nice. They also offer the DIY bride to rent out.

Nita's look: I love both Nita & Sudhir's choices for their wedding outfits. They complement each other perfectly and one does not dominate the other which often happens with ethnic wedding attire (especially Indian bridal gowns). Of course: the bride's wedding gown; more often than not does since it tends to be more heavily embroidered with metallic threads, crystals and intricate beading and stonework. But in this case: the wedding attire was elegant, sophisticated, soft yet glamorous all at the same time! I guess you could say - just perfect for this couple.

For the evening reception, Nita wore an exquisite light salmon (more peachy) lengha paired with an ice blue choli (the cap sleeves and cut of the blouse was absolutely beautiful on her). For the actual Hindu Marriage ceremony : she wore traditional red paired with a teal blue choli. Her maang tikka had blue beads which picked up on the blue embroidery on her pure silk duppatta and her bangles were blue instead the traditional red giving her outfit a modern twist to traditional. Brides keep in mind when you purchase your mang tikka buy a shape that complements your face - not dominate your entire look.

And for those brides shopping around for the perfect bridal lengha, I think it's really important especially for those who will need to cover their head for the religious part of their ceremony such as Sikh, Hindu or Muslim weddings that they consider a duppatta that will sit comfortably on the head. Many times designers come up with the most elaborate and regal embroideries which are quite heavy to hold let alone maneuver (50 pounds for the wedding lengha is not uncommon these days). Remember you will be wearing this outfit for at least 6 hours so you should be somewhat comfortable in what you choose.

Back to Nita and Suhir: I think they made smart, sophisticated choices when it came to choosing the perfect outfits for their big day. As she did when it came to her "look" for her hair and make up which was posh and polished. She's beautiful without makeup but with the make-up style that she chose; her best features popped and she had that gorgeous, healthy glow that brides have on their wedding day. She looked 'fresh' not heavily 'made-up'. She had her hair in a traditional up-do (simple, clean and carried the duppatta nicely). She chose to keep her hair down which looked glamorous and modern and paired beautifully with the contemporary styling of her evening wedding attire.

All around: Nita was a no-fuss bride who was just fabulous!!!

Canadian Living Magazine - Classy Weddings on a Budget

I'll continue with more details about Nita and Sudhir's wedding details a little bit later but wanted to share an article titled "How to Keep Your Wedding Classy on A Budget."

Deena Waisberg had contacted me while back in the fall to do a story in Canadian Living Magazine about weddings and how couples could save money when it came to financing one of the largest social events of their life. We talked, did the interview and was told that it would be several months before it would actually be published (sometime during the summer). Well, it's finally here (I think it actually came out in May).

Here are some more beautiful shots photographed by Match Studio You can kind of get a glimpse of the head table which literally looked like the couple were sitting in a cloud. Luxe silk fabrics were draped to perfection thanks to Renee and Joy of Amour Event Designs. Joy also set up a separate table where the bride and groom were seated so that they could view the Shiamak's Indo-Jazz Dance group on stage (wow that group has energy... the best part of that their dance performances is that they are interactive with audience participation). Most fun!!!

Just a quick note to DIY brides. To really add dimension to your decor add textured fabric. Look at the whites; you'll notice that it's white but there's a lot going on with the textures. Also notice the that the hints of blue are used subtly; the wine glasses, chair covers and blue gift boxes which had miniature Indian sweets (just the right size - kind of like the two bite brownies. These traditional indian sweets were custom ordered from Prabhu Sweets (based in Surrey BC). If you love Indian sweets you will also love their Ras Malai.

Okay back to the head head. Isn't it lovely: perfectly set for the guests of honor: the bride and groom (totally avoids dilemma of who should and should not be at the head table)! Keep it simple and keep it for two!

I forgot to mention a couple of important things about Nita & Sudhir's wedding theme.
The couple opted to work with 2 decorators instead of one due to the overall size of the wedding and also due to the fact that the reception was overall very large. There were approximately 600 guests who attended the evening dinner reception and approximately 150 guests who attended the intimate Hindu ceremony which took place under a mandap in one of the banquet rooms. The actual ceremony theme was red & platinum and was based on the colours of the actual mandap.
But first here is a look at creation created by Ganache Patisserie: one of the finest wedding cake designers based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Oh and thanks again to Rafael. We wouldn't be able to enjoy any of these if it wasn't for him.

Precious Moments Events & Designs - Jesse is another decor and rental company that can provide you rentals or do the full blown set-up for receptions. For this wedding: Precious Moments Events & Designs did the decor for the Mandap (which was provided by the very talented and beautiful Radha - previous host of What's New in Vancouver). The decor for the mandap was in other colours but we'll get to that later.

Flowers by Delta Flowers: Suki's flower shop - Delta Flowers is conveniently located in the heart of Surrey British Columbia. She offers fresh, affordable arrangements for most occasions and outdid herself with the blue orchid centre pieces she provided. Everyone involved with the wedding loved all the variations of flowers that she brought in to the meeting but opted to go for a simple yet elegant choice for the arrangements. We wanted something simple that would add colour (of course in shades of the overall theme of blue). Shushma Ji wanted something simple and elegant and that's exactly what Suki delivered .

A Moment in World History

Today was a moment I think many will feel in their hearts for years to come. The official inauguration of the first African American President Barack Obama. I'm not sure why I feel so excited for him or try to comprehend how he must be feeling but I have been. Walking out; composed, tall and confident and not showing any sign of emotion with millions of people cheering him on. Just imagine what he went through; all the efforts, energy, and sacrifices he made to get where he is today. I'm sure millions feel the same excitement as I do for whatever reasons. I don't know but just the thoughts of all the greatness he and his family will experience is amazing. His first night in the White House - surreal experiences and the excitement for the daughters the family and the millions of people who don't know him personally but wish him well. Best wishes for a better world and a better America!

Don't Eat Shark Soup at Weddings

Okay so much of my day is spent on the telephone and communicating with Vancouver Wedding Suppliers and for the most part; it's a lot of fun. Especially when the vendors I connect with are thinking 'outside' the box. Yes, they are able to see what I see and make anything imaginable possible and more importantly can incorporate any form of cultural elements into any wedding. The one supplier that still has me thinking after today's telecon ...actually I don't think that that I can classify her as a supplier even because she is not really supplying anything tangible to brides and grooms - more importantly she is 'sharing knowledge with them and they need to know'. What is this knowledge...well what' I'm about to share with you is a bit surprising and really has had me thinking about the whole thing since I got her email and that is; 'apparently eating Shark fin soup has contributed to drastic decline in the number of sharks in the ocean. And since Shark fin soup is often served at Chinese banquets and weddings she is wanting to educate brides and grooms about the inhumanity associated with it.' Kudos to her: first for standing up for what she believes in and 2) for actually making an effort to do something about it. I will connect with this individual later but it's ironic since I get this call on the day I am planning 'how food is incorporated' into various wedding customs. Go figure. Will keep you posted about the latest and greatest in the world of weddings!

Blogging Brides

I've been wanting to touch the world of 'Blogging' for a while now and have decided to finally take the plunge of doing so. So here goes my attempt to share some thoughts in my head and hopefully some tips that brides and grooms and family and friends will find useful when planning the wedding of their dreams. Today happens to be 10/08/08. Yes two days after the 8-8-8 phenomena which I didn't really hear that much about this year compared to the 7-7-7 weddings that took place last year. Some Vancouver wedding suppliers I spoke to Friday were up to their ears dealing with the intricate details of nuptials of their brides and grooms; especially those planning Asian weddings while others were not so busy. Any idea on how many couples tied on the knot in Vancouver on August 8, 2008. Or how many in Toronto?

I did hear that over 16,000 couples tied the knot in Bejing on the the supposedly lucky day but wondering how many people from non-Asian backgrounds took advantage of the lucky, healthy prosperous numbers? I'm sure when it comes to the actual wedding or should we say the marriage (after the wedding) everyone could use a little luck in that department.

I'm even more curious to know of the Non-Asian couples that married on this 'auspicious day' how many of them booked their wedding around the numerological superstition.

It seems that culture is broadening it's meaning and allowing any one to take any part of any thing and make it their own. Let's say culture-redefined. So what if I'm not Chinese. Is it still okay for me to take advantage of the superstition? Will it work if I'm not Chinese?

What about all the other Chinese superstitions I don't know. What about the number 13. Some cultures will do anything to avoid having a 13 ( I think based on the idea of the Friday 13 movies) while others think the number 13 is lucky. Who's right? Who's wrong?

Who cares! Whatever it is - take what you like and make it your own! What better time to start doing this than on your wedding where you have the opportunity to see the world of choices and ideas from the cultures around you. More to come in my next post. Until then...stay well and happy planning!
